“The UN: Outdated rules for a new reality?”
Celebrating 20 Years of UNYA Leuven: A Milestone Conference
Monday 4 May, UNYA Leuven hosted a landmark conference to reflect on the future of global governance.
This semester, our members worked intensively on a research project titled: “Outdated rules for a new reality: The UN's struggle with modern conflict.”
Guided by esteemed mentors, the research analyzes how the UN can maintain legitimacy in a multipolar world, focusing on the digital battlefield, the tension between humanitarian law and military reality, and the urgent need for reform.
Here’s to the next 20 years of youth engagement in international affairs.
We were honored to have a world-class panel discuss these pressing themes:
Prof. Jan Wouters: A leading expert in international law whose support was instrumental in the founding of UNYA Flanders.
Bénédicte Frankinet: Former Ambassador to the UN and Israel, sharing unparalleled diplomatic expertise.
Em. Prof. Dr. Gustaaf Janssens: Chair of Blue Shield Belgium, providing vital historical insights into international institutions.
Karen De Vos: Specialist in international law and cyberspace, focusing on the evolution of the digital battlefield.
A special thank you to our moderator, Anthony Callaert. As the original founder of UNYA, having him lead the debate 20 years later was a truly special "full-circle" moment for our association.
